DIY paper firelogs

Having a chance to have a fire burning when camping can be so nice for many reasons. It can be very useful for cooking purposes, but also when it's cold outside. (Does not apply to Myrtle Beach in the summer mind you!)

Having said that, it often is a challenge to bring your own wood since many campgrounds forbid bringing in any other wood that would not be bought locally. This is often to avoid bringing in pest that could have an impact on the local forests.

Buying wood in a campground on the other hand, can be very expensive. 10$ US for a few pieces of wood won't keep you warm for long.

I stumbled on a YouTube video of someone making fire logs with paper, and so I thought I would give it a try.

I followed the design the guy proposed, and the end results, although it did take some time to dry out, resembles to this:

I will be providing details as to how I made a better press using a car jack and some 2 x 4's .

In the meantime, stay tuned, as I will be trying the paper fire logs this week-end, since we are going to camp for the first time for this 2015 camping season, and it's going to be cold!!

Paper logs dried and ready to burn!

Here is a video of me doing a burn test. They turned out to be quite flammable and the bigger ones can burn up to 90 minutes, as per the video below.

  2. I did and they burned well! You do need to have a bit of wood to get the fire going though. I will try and capture a video of them burning this weekend !
